QANAT is a collective platform that explores the politics and poetics of water in Morocco and beyond to reflect and act upon the multiple contextual understandings and forms of (re)production of the commons.
QANAT is moved by the urgency of tackling the multiple material, symbolic and epistemic fractures produced by modernity, starting from our more proximate environments, and meandering into other geographies. Drawing from locally-embedded knowledge and from embodied practices of resistance and solidarity emerging in response to dominant environmental narratives and injustices, QANAT proposes to test the possibilities for the creation of spaces in which voices from the city of Marrakech can speculate on new collective imaginaries. In transversal permutations, the project develops archives of resonant reflections and actions to knit together local (often fragmented) struggles into transnational patterns and therein nourish debates across dispersed localities.
Mirroring the rhizomatic structure of the khettara system, QANAT is a methodologically diverse platform, a collective network in becoming composed of artists, cultural activists, community practitioners and researchers, which swings fluidly between artistic practices, social action and spatial research, and grounds itself on a praxis meant as inclusive, sustainable, radical and rhizomatic.
QANAT adopts a multi-disciplinary, situated, action-research approach and combines public programmes (research seminars, exhibitions, workshops and participatory projects), research residencies, and publications in Marrakech as much as elsewhere, to address some of the complex dynamics connected to our waterscapes.
Initiated and curated by Francesca Masoero at LE 18 (Marrakech), QANAT involves long-term contributors, such as Louisa Aarrass, Soumeya Ait Ahmed, Nassim Azarzar, A. George Bajalia, Noureddine Ezarraf, Sara Frikech, Jerome Giller, Abdellah Hassak, Amine Lahrach, Rim Mejdi, Shayma Nader, and Edouard Sors, with the punctual consultancy and contribution of Jeanne van Heeswijk, Laila Hida, Flore Grassiot and Heidi Vogels. QANAT is also developed in partnership with the Dar Bellarj Foundation in the framework of the Ateliers Collectifs. It has been supported by SouthMed CV / Med Culture, Stimulerings Fund, Wallonie Bruxelles International, Meet the Neighbours / Creative Europe and the Fondation Susanna Biedermann.
قناة هي استقصاء تعاوني طويل المدى، حول سياسات وشِعرية الماء في المغرب، وخارجه. وتمثل مسعى جماعي للتفكير والعمل وفق الأفهام السياقية المتعددة وأشكال إنتاج و(إعادة إنتاج) المشترك/المَشاع/الجماعي/العام.
تعتمد قناة، كمدخل، على تركات الحاضر والمعارف المحلية والبلدية المرتبطة بالماء في مراكش، تلك التي تتعلق بأنظمة القنوات المائية (أو الخطارات). هذه الأخيرة هي نسق من الآبار،الأنفاق، الأروقة تحت أرضية والقنوات الباطنية لجلب الماء والسقي، والذي يشكل خطوطا و دوائرا، توجد في إفريقيا، أوروبا الجنوب، الأمريكيتين وآسيا. يشكل هذا النسق أيضا تجسيدا لتعاقد اجتماعي يقوم على التوزيع والتشارك الجماعي، الحريص، لمورد شحيح، مهم وجوهري.
نهجًا على بنيةِ الخطاراتِ الجذمرية هذه، قناة هي شبكةٌ من الأشخاصِ ومنصةٌ متنوعة ومرنة من التطبيقاتِ الفنية، والممارساتِ البحثيةِ الاجتماعية والمكانية، وكذا المبادراتِ التشاركية التي تطرحُ وتُخاطب الدينامياتِ المركبة التي تتصل بقضايانا المائية.
إن اختلافَ المعاني والطرق لمقاربةِ القضايا المائية تؤكد وتكشف عن مواقفنا تجاه بعضُنا البعض، تجاه البيئةِ الطبيعية التي تحيطنا وتجاه الكائناتِ الحية الأخرى. وبالتالي فقناة يحركها استعجاليةُ التصدي ومعالجة الصدوع والفجوات المتعددة في أشكالها المادية، الرمزية والمعرفية التي أنتجتها الحداثة، وذلك بدءا من محيطنا الأكثر قربا، ثم التعرج إلى جغرافيات أخرى.
تقترح قناة تجريب إمكانات خلق فضاءات حيث يمكن لأصوات من حاضرة مراكش الإتيان والتفكير بمخيالات جماعية جديدة، انطلاقا من أشكال متعددة ومتنوعة من المعارف والمدارك المعاصرة والعتيقة، و حركات المقاومة والتضامُن التي تتحدى السرديات البيئية واللاعدالة المهيمنة.
كما يقوم المشروع بشكل تفاعلي بتطوير أشغال أرشيف تسعى لتفكير تجاوبي يشبِك، في آن، أشكال المقاومة والنضالات المحلية (التي غالبا ما تكون متشذرة ومعزولة) في نظائم دولية عابرة للجغرافيات الأخرى، من أجل المساهمة و تغذية نقاشات مشتركة بين وقائع ومواقع وسياقات محلية مختلفة ومتعددة.
