Halqa f‘Dar/AWAL feat. Abderrazak Baba, Mohamed Bariz, Hajiba al Magori Azalia

Conceived by Soumeya Ait Ahmed, Abdellah M. Hassak, and Francesca Masoero.
Sound design by Abdellah M. Hassak.

Featuring the voices of halaykis, hakawati and maalam Abderrazak Baba, Mohamed Bariz and Hajiba al Magori Azalia, Lgriha* is a tripartite, non-linear and multi-generational narration which explores Jemaa el Fna in different times of solidarity and resistance. Tracing temporal lines intersecting precolonial, colonial and postcolonial events, from the arrival of Moulay Ismail, to the gathering of halaykis on the square as a signal of the surge against French domination, from the present condition of a deserted and voided space consumed by exotisation and gentrification, to hint at desired or dystopian futures for the city of Marrakech, this episode offers a prism through which we can understand the square as a Lgriha, a common and shared space and the halqas inhabiting it as a Lgour, an agora or agraw if we were to adopt an Amazigh terminology. A squared constellation of circles and a place where by sharing poetry and words, worlds and politics unfold.
* A word originating from Taroudant (Morocco), L’griha stands for a gathering of men and women in a space to create music.

Lgriha is a special episode and sequel of Halqa f’Dar, a solidarity initiative launched by LE 18 during the Covid-19 pandemic, inviting the halayki of Jemaa el Fna to share in a discursive or performative way the art of their halqa in times of confinement. The project intersects research themes and methodological questions that have been carried out also by Awal, a programme focused on the valorisation of oral arts from different Moroccan regions, and the complexities and challenges of archiving oralities. The sound design, developed by Abdellah M. Hassak, integrates pieces from Awal’s archive of popular oralities and Hassak’s extensive archival and experimental research in the traditions and transformations of Moroccan polyrhythmic music.
