Rayyis al-Bhar | ريّس البحار
Rayyis al-Bhar is a playlist compiled by Firas Hamdan and Shayma Nader. It’s the beginning of a collaborative research on the musical heritage of the Meditteranean, how rhythms, tunes and words transformed and traveled through the waves to tell tales and change lives.
This playlist is one response to a deep frustration and anger caused by our forced separation from our water cultures, it’s a virtual return to the shores of the Meditteranean and a dream of other horizons where movement is unbounded. Rayyis al-Bhar features songs, chants, shanties and calls spanning a wide spectrum of genres and influences from different locations; Latakia, Alexandria, Sfax, Favignana among others, composed by sailors, fishermen, immigrants and lovers drawn to the waters.
